It's well-known that Denmark is considered the happiest country in the world, with its capital (Copenhagen) being the happiest city. But how? And why? Out of all the countries in the world, how can this small Scandinavian country that has long and cold winters be the place where people are labeled the “most happy”? It was hard for me to understand how and why until I, myself, roamed the streets of Copenhagen in December.
I’m sure you would have guessed that it’s cold in Copenhagen in December. Assuming it was just a tad cold soon bit me in the ass the moment I walked outside the train station after we arrived that winter evening in Copenhagen and realized it was much colder than I planned. I immediately regretted packing that extra pair of jeans and shoes in my carry-on bag instead more winter gear....
Despite being cold, I was excited to see Copenhagen in the morning because I knew for a fact (and anticipated) that the city wouldn't be anything less than beautiful. As we walked the streets toward our hotel that night, I soon forgot about the cold as well as the anticipation of the morning and focused on what was right in front of me…the most gorgeous city I have ever seen at night. It was beginning to come clear why Copenhagen is the happiest city in the world: an amazing feeling you get as you experience the vibrant, beautiful, serene, lively, and exciting nights.
Honestly, it was crazy how much happiness I felt within 5 minutes of being there. I'll never forget that feeling of serenity, pleasure and excitement as we ventured around the city that night. Was it travel adrenaline? Maybe. But it’s safe to say I never had that feeling while traveling any city before... and the fact that I got this incredible feeling each and every night in Copenhagen. I will never forget how much happiness filled every inch of my body day and night as we explored as much of the city as possible.
Here are 4 places you must visit at night in Copenhagen, Denmark that will for sure give you goosebumps and give you a better sense of why this city is the happiest in the world:
1. Tivoli

2. Nyhavn

3. The Round Tower (The Observatory)
It’s not steep, but you may get a little dizzy walking the paved, spiral staircase-like (don't worry, there are no stairs) tower all the way up to its observatory. Take a couple of breaks on the way up. There’s no rush...especially at night when there is no crowd. When you get to the top, hop in line to look through the telescope that veers out in the distance. Then, step outside and get one of the best views of Copenhagen in the city. See the many city lights, along with the starlight to capture a moment you’ll never forget. You may want to visit here during the daytime as well!

4. City Hall Square

You just have to visit Copenhagen, Denmark to understand what I'm talking about. The city is just as beautiful during the night as it is during the day. The feeling you get walking around this amazing city, especially during the nighttime will surely give you a better understanding of why this city and country is considered the happiest in the world.
Safe Travels,
Veronica
P.S. Be sure to be safe walking any city at night!
